The Council of Albanian Ambassadors expresses deep concern over the disgraceful incident involving hate speech against Albanians during a basketball match in Kumanovo. This is an unacceptable development that undermines the spirit of coexistence and interethnic harmony in North Macedonia.

Albanians in North Macedonia are not a marginalized minority to be disrespected, they are a vital factor of stability and an integral part of the country’s social and institutional fabric. They are co-founders of the democratic and constitutional order, not subjects of intimidation or exclusion.

Even more troubling is the silence of the North Macedonian leadership in the face of such an incident.

This silence is worrying, not only for Albanians but for the democratic future of North Macedonia itself. The North Macedonian leadership must not follow the divisive and destabilizing example set by Vučić in the region. Instead, they must demonstrate maturity, responsibility, and a state-building vision.

Albanians in North Macedonia are not fearful, they are fully aware of their historic and current role as guarantors of coexistence and supporters of the country’s Euro-Atlantic perspective. Therefore, institutional action against hate speech is not just a moral obligation, it is a political necessity for ensuring stability and peaceful coexistence in an equal and democratic society.

Today, more than ever, determination, inclusion, and mutual respect are essential, the only path toward a shared future built on peace and dignity.
